Spice Cabinet

I recently visited my mom in Kansas City, and while there I stopped by Penzey’s. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Penzey’s (www.penzeys.com), it’s a smaller national chain of spice stores. We first visited the KC Penzey’s when I was in Lawrence for undergrad, and we’re now converts. Their herbs and spices are so much more fragrant than the stuff you’d get in the grocery store, and the prices are very reasonable (especially if you buy the bulk bags rather than new jars every time). It’s really amazing how much more you notice the flavors of the herbs and spices in the food when they actually have scent and taste. This last visit, I came home with another sack full of spices, and no containers to put them in, so I decided to spend today organizing and labeling our spice cabinet. Now we probably have about 50 different herbs, spices and blends (at a conservative estimate), so organizing them can be a bit of a handful. We already had some lovely 4oz magnetic spices tins that we’ve been using for a couple of years, but I hadn’t quite gotten around to labeling them. Since we’ve both been getting a bit tired of having to smell the powder to tell if it’s garlic or onion, I took the opportunity to label our extant tins as well.

While the picture is rather terrible, the cabinet itself is FINALLY organized. I still have some slightly larger tins on order for some of the remaining spices (stick cinnamon, bay etc), but otherwise, it’s done. All in all, a nice day’s work.
